Alfred James Porting was born February 19, 1924 southwest of Axtell, Kansas, the third of nine children of Peter and Irene (Godbout) Porting.  He attended school at Grandview and St. Michael’s Grade Schools and St. Michael’s High School until the beginning of his sophomore year when his father’s failing health necessitated that he stay home to work on the family farm. Later Al went into partnership with his brother, Gene where they did farming, custom combining and silage chopping.

On November 23, 1974 Al married Sarah Green.  They raised four children:  Kenneth, Debbie, Vicky and Steve.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 1163.

Al was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous.  His knowledge of the program and his kindness helped many others to recover.  He and Sarah opened their home up to many gatherings to allow alcohol and drug addicts to have social events in a supportive environment.

Al enjoyed playing cards, going to mass and social gatherings.  He was particularly devoted to his grandchildren and took great pride in them.

Preceeding Al in death were his parents, three sisters, one brother and a step-son, Kenneth Green.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah, of the home; children, Debbie Green, Omaha, NE, Vicky (Jeff) Herbster Basehor, KS, Steve (Kim) Green, Marysville, KS; one brother, Gene (Darleen) Porting, Beattie, KS; three sisters, Marjorie Buessing, Axtell, KS, Anna Marie Kuckelman, Seneca, KS and Dorothy (Robert) Landrum of Hot Springs, AR.  He is also survived by five grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Al will be greatly missed by his wife, family and countless number of friends.
