Alvin Bauman

A lvin Leo Bauman, Sr., 100, of Sabetha, Kansas died Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Sabetha Manor.

He was born on May 28, 1913, near Oneida, to John and Leah (Zehr) Bauman.  He was a graduate of Victor District 99 Grade School, and a 1933 graduate of Oneida High School.

Alvin married Minnie Strube of Powhattan on March 2, 1935.  She preceded him in death in 1995.

In addition to being a farmer-stockman, he was a public servant.  His service included Victory and Woodlawn rural school boards for 16 years, the Kansas House of Representatives for six terms, the Kansas Senate for one term, two years as Nemaha County Treasurer, and 14 years as Nemaha County Clerk.  He retired from public life in 1985.

He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Mercier, in 1935.  He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fairview, and for many years was active in the Lutheran Laymen’s League.

He was a charter member of the Sabetha Lions Club.

Survivors include his five sons;  Alvin “Bud” (Ursula) Bauman, Sabetha, Arwin (Loretta) Bauman, Topeka; Dale (Karen) Bauman, Fairfield, Nebraska, Galen (Karen) Bauman, Sabetha, Rev. Gene (Mary) Bauman, Spearfish, South Dakota;  three daughters, Marlene (Ray) Hightower, Manhattan, Thurlene DeVilbiss, Sulphur, Louisiana, and Janet Hoyer of Pittsburg; 23 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Ella Domnick of Eureka, Illinois.  Preceding him in death were a grandson, Ralph Thomas Bauman; his parents; six brothers, Edwin, William, Samuel, Noah, John and Joey; three sisters, Mary Grose, Priscilla Williams, and Emma Waterman.

Funeral service is Friday, November 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairview, Kansas.  Visitation is Thursday, October 31, 2013 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.  Interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be left to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund or donor's choice, sent in care of the funeral home, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, KS 66534.
