Alvin Meyer

January 8, 1925 — September 11, 2014

A lvin was born January 8, 1925 in Volga, South Dakota, the son of Otto and Susie (Piebenga) Meyer.  He went to join his family in Heaven on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha , Kansas.

During WW II, Alvin helped his dad on the farm. In January 1946, he enrolled at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, South Dakota. After two quarters, when he was eligible for the draft, he enlisted in the Army. For approximately 18 months he was in Japan with the Army Counter Intelligence, Seventh Core .  Upon returning from the service in May 1948 he reentered the University and three months later married Ruth Schonewill in August 1948.  Alvin graduated from SDSU in 1952 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Dairy Science. He was recalled into a rmy service during the Korea n War for approximately 10 months which was spent state side in Maryland and New Jersey.

After college Al worked in quality control in the dairy industry in several locations.  In 1965, he began working for the USDA, Dairy Division, as a resident grader and inspector.  He worked in Rochester, MN and Chillicothe, Mo. before he was transferred to Sabetha, KS. Although Alvin retired after 25 years of service with the USDA, he continued to work for them part time for another nine years.  In retirement he and Ruth were able to enjoy travel with their 5 th wheel RV.  Alvin also enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, fishing, and church activities.  He was a current member of the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha.

Alvin and Ruth shared 66 years in marriage.  He is survived by his wife, Ruth, two sons, Wally (Dona) Meyer of Independence, MO and Darrel (Jane) Meyer of Kansas City, KS; three daughters, Sheryl (Dennis) Kelly of Boise, Idaho, Barbara (Bill) Donnelly of Olathe, KS and Lori (Bill) Rieger of Powhattan, KS; 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and  a sister, Adeline (Wesley) Kalleymn of Plato, Mo.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: George, William, Henry, and Pete, three sisters: Gladys, Wilhelmina, and Helen, and one grandchild, Timothy Hudgins.

Funeral service is Monday, September 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha.  The family will greet friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests m emorial contributions made to the NorthRidge Family Development Center or Gideon International, sent in care of the funeral home, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, KS 66534.
