Arthur Berkley
January 30, 1922 — August 17, 2009
Arthur Milton Berkley 87, died Monday August 17, 2009 at Holmes Lake Manor in Lincoln, Nebraska. Where he resided following a hip fracture in November of 2008.
Milton was born January 30th, 1922 in Hamlin, Kansas. He was the son of Arthur Elias and Hazel (Chadwick) Berkley and was baptized in the Hamlin Church of the Brethren.
He graduated from Sabetha High School and married Ruby Opal Rokey in 1941.
He was a dedicated Safeway Grocery Store manager, starting as a bag boy while in high school in Sabetha, Kansas. From Sabetha they moved to Auburn, Nebraska and then Red Oak, Iowa where he managed his first store. His last move was to Denison, Iowa where he managed the Safeway for twenty-nine years. Denison was his home for nearly sixty years.
Milt loved the great out of doors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Some of his greatest joys were to see a formation of geese or to spot a deer or a pheasant in a corn field.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Opal Berkley, a son, Steven Berkley and a granddaughter, Staci Siemer.
He is survived by a sister, Maxine Lewis of Stone Mountain, Georgia.; two daughters, Barbara Richards and her fiance, Malcolm Sanderson of Ft. Pierce, Florida and Cheryl Siemer and her husband, Jim of Lincoln, Nebraska: a son, Philip Berkley and his wife, Candace of Grimes, Iowa: grandchildren, Erik Richards and his wife, Stacy of Lake Wales, Florida, Stephanie Fleck and her husband, Scott of Omaha, Nebraska, Matthew Richards of Canton, Ohio, Heidi McInerny and her husband, Chris of Lincoln, Nebraska, Lenore Maybaum and her husband, Nathan, Steven Berkley of Grimes Iowa., Emma Berkley of Des Moines, Iowa and Beau Berkley of Grimes, Iowa and thirteen great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life service will be Friday, August 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha, Kansas with a visitation one hour before service time. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contribution may be made to a charity yet to be designated by the family.
A memorial service will be August 26, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa 1437 Broadway Denison, Iowa 51442 a visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. The Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha is in charge of arrangements.
