Barbara Moore

Barbara June Popkess Moore, 82, died April 5, 2011 at the Sabetha Commuity Hospital. She was born March 2, 1929 in Sabetha, Kansas to William Robert Popkess, Jr. and Francis Tarr Popkess. When she was but several months old, her mother died unexpectedly. Barbara was raised in the home of her grandparents in Centralia, Kansas where she attended grade school and Jr. High School. She moved to the home of her father and his wife Iola Popkess and attended and gradated from Sabetha High School in 1947. She enrolled in the University of Kansas School for Nursing and received her diploma in 1950. She then enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a registered nurse with the rank of Lieutenant. She was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia; San Antonio, Texas and other bases. After her honorable discharge from the service, she and her husband Don Adams of Brock, Nebraska lived in Kansas City; Fairbury, Nebraska and Kearney, Nebraska. Don died in November of 1958 of Hodgkin’s disease at a young age leaving Barbara with two young sons; Mark and Brad Adams.
Barbara was later united in marriage to John “Jack” Moore. They made their home in Kearney, Nebraska until moving to Angola, Indiana where Jack attended Tri-State College and two sons were born to this union; Timothy and Alan Jeffery.
Barbara worked for a few years as County Nurse in Angola for Steuben County. She and others were instrumental in starting the Well Child Clinic. She and her family then moved to Sabetha in 1976 where they owned and operated the Sabetha Greenhouse.
Barbara and Jack moved from Sabetha to Palisade, Colorado in 1981 after selling the greenhouse. Barbara worked at the Grand Junction, Colorado Veteran’s Hospital. As Jack’s health deteriorated, they returned to Sabetha in 1992 for nursing home care. Jack passed away in May of 2002.
Barbara moved to the Apostolic Christian Home in October of 2009. She resided there until her death.
Surviving are her four sons, Mark and Susan Moore of Hebron, Nebraska; Brad and Diane Moore of Auburn, Indiana; Timothy and Christine Moore of Remington, Indiana; and Alan Jeffery and Peggy Moore of Sabetha; twelve grandchildren and one great grandson; a sister Sue Popkess of Florence, Colorado; a brother, Roger Popkess of Sabetha and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. A visitation will be Friday evening 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nemaha County Home Health & Hospice sent in care of the funeral home.
