Betty Jean (King) Meyer, 80, of Sabetha, Kansas died Friday, July 01, 2011 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Betty was born July 31, 1930 in Kelly, Kansas to Lynn and Pearl (Cotton) King. Shortly after her birth the family moved from Kelly to a farm around Bancroft. She attended country schools through eighth grade and moved south of Oneida where she graduated from Oneida High School in 1948.

On September 8, 1948 Betty was united in marriage to Gerald Meyer in Seneca, Kansas. She worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Sabetha until its closure, and then went to work in Topeka at AT&T. She retired from the phone company with a total of 35 years as an operator. Betty was active in the Sabetha VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Sabetha Methodist Church, and the Topeka Women’s Bowling League. She enjoyed reading, knitting, cooking, and most of all her children and grandchildren’s activities.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Stacy Meyer-Griffith; a great-grandson, Drew Bradbury, and her sister, Charlotte Howey.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald H. Meyer of Sabetha; two sons, Gerald L. Meyer of Kansas City and Rick G. Meyer of Sabetha; a daughter, Coni K. Fenton and her husband Tom of Topeka; two sisters, her twin sister Bonnie Milne of Cimarron, and Barbara Allen and her husband Jerry of Sabetha; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Sabetha. The family will greet friends Tuesday, July 5, 2011 from 7-8 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Interment will take place in the Albany Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church Building Fund, sent in care of the funeral home, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, KS 66534.
