C alvin Weiss, 91of Sabetha died Thurday, February 27, Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. He was born on March 5, 1922 to Mary Clara (Merkle) Weiss and Carl J. Weiss in rural LaCrosse, Indiana. Calvin graduated from Liberty Center High School in 1940 and was drafted into the Navy in June of 1944. He served on a Landing Ship Medium in the Pacific Ocean from 1945 to 1946.

On February 21, 1948 he was united in marriage to Dena Marie Knobloch in Lester, Iowa. From October 1948 until 1952 Calvin and Dena owned and operated the Morris Barbecue in Elgin, Illinois. They raised their two children and lived in Elgin for 46 years. During their time in Elgin Calvin worked as a stationary engineer for the Elgin Watch Factory, Chief Laundry, Borden's of Woodstock, and Holy Family Hospital, and retired from A.B. Dick Company in 1987. While Calvin and Dena lived in Elgin they enjoyed gardening, landscaping their yard, and building and operating their HO model train layout. Calvin and Dena were members of the Apostolic Christian Church in Elgin. In August, 1994 they sold their home and moved to the Apostolic Christian Retirement West Village in Sabetha, Kansas. The Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha became their new church home.

Calvin is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dena, their daughter, Vicki (Scott) Samelson, their son, Kurt (lori) Weiss, and their three grandsons, Bret Samelson, Richard Weiss, and Silas Weiss. He is also survived by three brothers, Paul Weiss, Robert Weiss, and Morey Weiss, and one sister, Patricia Schifferer.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha.  A visitation is Tuesday evening 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be mad to the Apostolic Christian Church or the Apostolic Christian Home sent in care of the funeral home.
