Carolyn Heiniger

Carolyn L. Heiniger, age 76, of Sabetha passed away Monday, January 11, 2010.


Carolyn, daughter of William Carl and Gladys (Spalding) Shewey, was born on October 16, 1933 in Maysville, Missouri. She attended school in Maysville and Cameron, Missouri and Sabetha schools after her parents moved to Sabetha in 1943.


Carolyn graduated from Sabetha High School in 1951 and attended Airline Technical School in Omaha, NE. Carolyn worked for TWA, Trans World Airlines in Kansas City, MO for five years. During this time she enjoyed several trips with her parents to visit relatives in California.


Carolyn married Howard Heiniger on September 28, 1958. They made their home on the family farm west of Sabetha. They then moved to Lamar, CO when Howard started his career with Quality Oil. Two years later they moved to Greensburg, KS then returning home to Sabetha to lease a Quality Oil station north of town.


After the death of her husband Howard, Carolyn worked in Topeka, KS at Southwestern Bell. After several years of commuting from Sabetha, she moved to Topeka in 1984 then returned to Sabetha in 1995. Carolyn completed 25 years of service in various departments at Southwestern Bell before retiring in 1998. She also volunteered with the Nemaha County Home Health and Hospice within the last couple of years.


She enjoyed traveling, going on several bus trips to the east and west coasts, including Canada. Her most recent bus trip was a 3 week trip to Nova Scotia. Carolyn enjoyed other hobbies including piece quilting and sewing. She also enjoyed working at the Apostolic Christian Nursing Home.


Carolyn was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Connie Beth, in 1974; husband, Howard on October 13, 1979; and a brother, Estel Shewey of Dodge City in 1980.


Survivors include her children, Cynthia (Gregg) Miller of Bendena, KS, Cedric (Karen) Heiniger of Sabetha, KS, and Caryn (Rod) McAdams of Morganville, KS; Six grandchildren, Garett Miller, Alesha Miller, Kaylee Heiniger, Amanda Heiniger, Ashley McAdams, and Ryan McAdams; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Shewey of Dodge City, KS; nephew, Mike (Carla) Shewey of Dodge City, KS, and niece Linda (Elton) Griffith of Houston, TX.


Funeral service will be held Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha at 10:30 a.m. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. Interment will take place at the Albany Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be left to the Methodist Church Youth or the Apostolic Christian Home, sent in care of funeral home.
