Charles Dornes

January 12, 1918 — April 22, 2007

Charles Henry Dornes was born on January 12, 1918 the son of Henry Bert and Emily Molly (Martensen) Dornes at Alta Vista, Kansas.


He was united in marriage to Mary L. Slayton on October 29, 1944 at the Slayton Family Home in Salem, Nebraska. Two children were born to this union. Charles was a dairy farmer for several years. Charles and Mary own and operated the Sycamore Springs resort for 17 years. He worked as a cars salesman for Brey Motors and was a Massey Harris dealer for several years.


Charles died on April 22, 2007 at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Maurice Dornes; a grand daughter, Amy Jo Dornes. Charles is survived by his wife, Mary Dornes of Sabetha; one son, Daniel Dornes of Sabetha; one daughter Bonita Hanni of Evamston, Illinois; 6 grandchildren, David Dornes of Bethalto, Illinois, Kevin Dornes of Overland Park, Kansas, Melissa Dornes of Topeka, Kansas, Brad Dornes of Manhattan, Kansas, Jody Becker of Corning, Kansa and Sam Hanni of Lafayette, Indiana and two great grandchildren, Kennedy Becker and Raegan Becker.


Funeral services will be Thursday, April 26, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha with Pastor Randy Garber from Trinity Church of the Brethren of Sabetha.


Linda Lehman will serve as organist and Ruth Kellenberger will sing "Always" and "How Great Thou Art".


Honorary casket bearers will be Dale Aue, Daryl Bechtelheimer, J.R. Hanni, Melvin Harold, Dan Kellenberger, and Rayburn Wikle.


Casket bearers will be Brad Dornes, David Dornes, Kevin Dornes, Sam Hanni, Dennis Murchison, John Murchison, Mike Murchison.


A family visitation will be Wednesday evening 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Cotton Public Library or the Trinity Church of the Brethren sent in care of the funeral home.
