Charles R. Johnstone, 86, of Sabetha, died Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Sabetha Manor.
Charles was born on May 3, 1924 in Goff, Kansas the son of James Johnstone and Rosa (Strenge) Johnstone; he was the youngest of 16. He attended school in Goff. Charles worked in Wichita assembling aircraft until he was drafted into the Army in 1943. Charles worked as a courier in the Army in Washington, D.C. and was honorably discharged in 1946.
On June 2, 1946 Charles married Helen Hoppe, and to this union was born one child. Charles did some farming around the Goff area, and then went to work for Mid-Am in Sabetha in October 1947. He also worked part-time for International Harvesters. In 1948 the family moved from Goff to Sabetha. Charles also began working part-time for the City of Sabetha. He retired from Mid-Am in 1987 and retired from the City of Sabetha in 2007 at the age of 83.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen in 1986; and his 15 siblings. Survivors include his daughter, Rose Fletchall and her husband, Lonnie of Sabetha; one grandson, Shane Fletchall and his wife, Bobbi of Topeka; two granddaughters, Barbi Collins and her husband, Virgil of Newport News, Virginia, and Michelle Claudy and her husband, Guy of Dupont, Washington; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 11, 2011 at 10:30 AM at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. The family will greet friends from 9:00 AM until service time. Inurnment will take place in the Wetmore Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nemaha County Home Health & Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home.
