Dan Anderson

December 22, 1928 — March 5, 2019

D an D. Anderson, 90, of Sabetha, KS passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the Sabetha Manor.

Dan was born December 22, 1928 in Clay Center, KS the son of Herbert and Berta (Hundley) Anderson.  He was one of 10 children.  On January 24, 1946, Dan was united in marriage to Frances Sandberg in Clay Center, KS. To this union were born four daughters. They lived in various northeast Kansas communities until settling in Sabetha in June of 1956.

Dan enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard on January 31, 1949. Dan would jokingly tell people he served his country honorably for 39 years, 8 months and 14 days to avoid the label of a “lifer” in the military. In 1968 Dan was activated and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in December of 1988.

Dan’s retirement years were occupied with volunteering his time by taking individuals to the VA Hospital in Topeka, helping at the Topeka Rescue Mission, working with Let’s Help and giving speeches at schools about military service and patriotism.  He was instrumental in establishing the Sabetha Food Pantry. Dan was the Sabetha Santa Claus for many years during the Sabetha downtown window opening.  Dan had a daily routine of going to coffee at Buzz Café early in the morning, then to Casey’s, stopped by Aberle Ford for a bit then off to his daughters hair salon and rounded the day off with coffee at Ampride.

He was inducted in the National Guard Hall of Fame in November of 2004. In September of 2018 Dan went on the Kansas Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He was an active life member of the Sabetha VFW Post #7285 and the Fairview American Legion Post #322.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fran; a daughter, Danise Snook; two sons-in-law, Michael David Baker and David Thieme; a granddaughter, Dawn Jenkins and his nine siblings.

He is survived by his daughters, Diane Thieme, Connie Lukert and her husband, Lee, and Cindi Baker all of Sabetha; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Anderson of Wellington, KS and Barbara Anderson of Clay Center, KS; son-in-law, David Snook of Topeka, KS; 12 grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.
