David and O'Detta Koch

David Alan Koch and O’Detta Lavern Koch, of Sabetha, Kansas, beloved husband and wife, parents, grandparents, and cherished friends, passed away together on Friday, May 2, 2025.

David was born on August 11, 1961, in Sabetha, Kansas, to Gerald “Jack” and Mary Ann (Frazee) Koch. O’Detta was born on April 14, 1963, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to Bennie and Dolly (Zimmerschied) Thomason. They were married on August 17, 1984, at the Brown County Courthouse and spent 40 beautiful years side by side.

David and O’Detta built their life together in Sabetha, raising a family grounded in love, laughter, and resilience. A walk through their home told the story of what they valued most: their family. Every wall and shelf reflected their pride and love. They were wonderful parents, providing their children with a lifetime of amazing adventures and memories. Family vacations to Colorado, Omaha, Gulf Shores, and other destinations were just a few of the many ways they created lasting joy and togetherness. They were present for every moment, not just for their children, but for their grandchildren as well. Every school event, sports game, and family celebrations were attended with pride and unconditional support. No matter how far the miles, they never missed a moment.

David and O’Detta also loved their home deeply. Over the years, they remodeled every room from top to bottom, pouring care and pride into every corner. Everything was touched by them, whether it was a piece of furniture David refinished by hand or a carefully chosen decoration placed by O’Detta.

They also shared a love for the open road. One of their favorite ways to spend time together was riding their motorcycles or driving their convertible through the countryside, enjoying the peace, freedom, and togetherness found in the miles they traveled side by side—even into their final sunset.

David and O’Detta worked at Wenger Manufacturing in Sabetha, where they were known not just as employees, but as friends and reliable, hard-working colleagues. David surpassed 30 years of service at Wenger, a testament to his loyalty, skill, and steady work ethic.

David was a quiet soul, steady and sincere, with a dry wit that could catch you off guard in the best way. If you were lucky enough to catch a smile from him, it meant you’d truly earned a place in his heart. David was always willing to lend a hand to fix anything, never asking for anything in return. He kept his own home in immaculate condition, constantly remodeling, building, or improving something. His craftsmanship and generosity were admired by all who knew him.

O’Detta was an avid traveler and found joy in exploring new places with her many dear friends. She had several close-knit groups of ladies with whom she shared countless adventures, laughter, and lifelong memories. She never knew a stranger and had a special gift for making others feel seen, bringing joy and laughter wherever she went. Her independent spirit and bright smile could light up any room.

David and O’Detta lived a life of deep love, quiet generosity, and unwavering dedication to family, work, and their community. Whether it was riding country roads, remodeling their home, attending events, or exploring the world together, they lived fully and loved deeply. While their loss is immeasurable, their legacy continues in the lives of those they loved most.

David and O’Detta are survived by their three beloved children and seven grandchildren. Their daughter, Jody Laufenberg and her husband, Cody, and their children, Peyton, Madison, and Landon of Kinsley, Kansas; their daughter, Katie Rokey, and her husband, Chris, and their children, Jason and Hudson of Topeka, Kansas; and their son, Benjamin Koch and wife, Kiley, and their children, Quinton and Everett of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald “Jack” and Mary Ann Koch.

David is survived by his five siblings, Ronnie and Donnie Koch, Margaret (John) Rebant, Jackie (Merlin) Koch, and Susan (Tom) Gudenkauf.

O’Detta was preceded in death by her stepfather, Tommy Vian.

O’Detta is survived by her parents, Bennie Thomason and Dolly Vian; her four brothers, Billy (Carrie) Thomason, David (Patty) Thomason, Rodney (Kim) Thomason, and Ronnie (Amy) Thomason; and her sister, Arline Brown.

David and O’Detta leave behind a large and loving extended family who will forever miss their presence.
