Dorothy Charles

D orothy M. Charles, 96, formally of Morrill died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Sabetha, Kansas.  She was born on June 20, 1917 in Hamlin, Kansas the daughter of Jacob L. Charles and Ella (Heise) Charles.  She was the first of seven children born to this union.  She attended Pleasant Hill Elementary School. After eighth grade, she attended high school and college at Beulah Academy in Upland, California.  She graduated in 1943 with an elementary teaching certificate and for the next 5 years taught school in Murietta and Cucamonga, California.  She then went into the Navajo Mission Field and taught in Bloomfield, New Mexico for many years.  She returned to the Morrill and cared for her aging parents while continuing to teach at Morrill.  After school consolidations, Dorothy taught third grade at Sabetha until her retirement in 1982 and received a 25 year certificate for her years of service in the Morrill and Sabetha schools.  She resided at the Apostolic Christian Village since 2002.  She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Kenneth Charles, Landon Charles and Paul Charles; one sister, Marjorie Charles.  She is survived by a brother, Stanley Charles and his wife, Paula of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a sister, Ardys Sider of Upland, California and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.  Visitation will be held one hour before service time at the funeral home.  The interment will be made in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery east of Morrill.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Morrill Baptist Church sent in care of the funeral home.
