Dorothy Summers

Dorothy Summers, 96, of Sabetha died at the Apostolic Christian Home on Thursday, September 8, 2011.

She was born on July 19, 1915 in Padonia, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Leroy Brigham and Etta Imo (McConnaughey) Brigham. After graduating from Hiawatha High School, she received training at a beauty school in St. Joseph, Missouri and operated the Vanity Beauty Shoppe with her sister, Geneva, in Sabetha.

On October 16, 1939, she married Gerald Summers in the parsonage of the Christian Church in Hiawatha. They rented a house in Sabetha until 1934 when they moved to the home on Virginia Street where she lived until a year before her death. Dorothy was a homemaker and Cub Scout Den Mother, she loved to fish and golf and was an avid bridge player. Gerald owned and operated Summers Marker and died on December 21, 1985.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Brigham; her sister, Geneva Ukele and a son Kim Gene Summers. She is survived by a step-son, Gary of St. Joseph, Missouri and four sons, Jim of Calistoga, California, Jeri of Columbia, Missouri, Jon of Sabetha, Kansas and Kirk of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews, Pam Ukele of Hannibal, Missouri, Paula Miller of Shawnee, Kansas and Stephen and Lee Ukele of Sabetha and Beverly Perry of Axtell, Kansas.

Dorothy was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date and time. The Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha is in charge of arrangements.
