Elanore (Swanny) Swanson Johnson, age 88, passed away at Frankfort Community Care Home on April 20, 2011.
Elanore was born on November 24, 1922, in Oklahoma City, to Helen F. I. and Dr. Carl A. B. Swanson. At a very young age she moved with her parents to Savonburg, Kansas.
She graduated from Agustana University in Rock Island, Illinois with a degree in Social Work. Elanore returned to Axtell, Kansas where her father was a minister at Salem Lutheran Church. She worked briefly for the Marysville, Kansas Welfare Department.
On April 9, 1947, Elanore and Lyle D. Johnson were united in marriage at Salem Lutheran Church of rural Axtell, KS. They made their home and raised their family on a farm in the Swede Settlement. After Lyle passed away in 2001, Elanore continued living on the farm for several years before moving to Elm Street Apartments in Frankfort, Ks. She later moved to the Frankfort Community Care Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, her parents, Dr. Carl A. B. Swanson and Helen Swanson, her parents-in-law, Edward Johnson and Clara Johnson, three brothers-in-law, Stanley Swanson, Lloyd Polson and Harvey Swanson. She is survived by her four children, Richard Johnson and wife Mary Ann of Frankfort, Janet Neilson and husband Bill of Leonardville, Charles Johnson and wife Sandy of Manhattan and Joan O’Dell and husband Don of Berryton, two sisters, Lois Swanson of Olathe, Delores Polson of Frankfort and one sister-in-law, Inez Swanson of Frankfort, nine grandchildren, Jennifer Dodson and husband Lloyd of Overland Park, KS, Kenneth Neilson and wife Shawn, Cindy Neilson of Manhattan, KS, Eric Neilson of Arlington, Texas, Megan and Amanda Johnson of Nashville, Tennessee, Tanner Johnson of Manhattan, Edward O’Dell of Chanute, Ks, LeeAnna O’Dell of Topeka, KS, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Elanore Johnson will be Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Salem Lutheran Church south of Axtell, KS. Pastor Charlene Barnes will conduct the services. Shirley Polson will play the organ and Iris Turnbull will sing “Just a Closer Walk with Me”. Casket bearers are Tanner Johnson, Edward O’Dell, Kenneth Neilson, Eric Neilson, Lloyd Dodson and John Polson. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery
Mrs. Johnson will lie in state at the Landreth-Popkess Funeral Home all day Friday the 19 th . A family visitation will follow the funeral service with a luncheon in the church basement.
Memorials at this time have not been decided but will be designated at a later date. Memorials are currently being left to the Elanore Johnson Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Landreth-Popkess Funeral Home, Axtell, KS.
