Eleanor Stover

E leanor Jane (Picton) Stover, 82, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas.

Eleanor was born on March 1, 1938 in Padonia, Kansas the daughter of Everett Vernon Picton and Ruth Esther (Hinton) Picton.

She was raised on the family farm southwest of Hamlin, Kansas and attended school in Hamlin.  Eleanor graduated from Hamlin High School with the class of 1956.  After high school, she went on to nursing school at Kansas University. She “walked the hill” and graduated from KU with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in May of 1960.

Eleanor was united in marriage to Gary Grant Stover on September 3, 1960 at the Church of the Brethren in Morrill, Kansas.  Three children, Jayne, Rhonda, and Craig, were born to this union.  Gary and Eleanor raised their family and farmed together until his death in 1984.

As a registered nurse, Eleanor was committed to providing compassionate and competent care.  She extended this care to many of her own family members and many friends as she worked alongside Dr. Duckett and Dr. Larson at their clinics in Hiawatha, Kansas.  When her husband passed away, she returned to nursing as the Director of Nursing at the Sabetha Manor.  In this position, Eleanor was committed to educating and training fellow nurses, certified nursing assistants, and other staff to provide professional, caring, and dignified care to the residents.  Also, Eleanor enjoyed working with children.  She was a Sunday school teacher, led the Good News Club in Morrill, and was a leader for the Morrill Tip Top and Hamlin 4-H clubs.  Eleanor was a member of the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha, Kansas and the Women’s Fellowship.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gary, on June 8, 1984; and her brother, John Vernon Picton.

She is survived by her three children; Jayne (Kurt) Snyder of Morrill, Kansas, Rhonda (Gary) Elsbernd of Topeka, Kansas, and Craig (Chrissy) Stover of Morrill, Kansas; her eight grandchildren, Jarod, Logan, and Jesse Snyder, Meridith (Elsbernd) DeForest, Ben and Dan Elsbernd, and Andrew and Libbie Stover; her nine great-grandchildren, Bailey, Tatum, Jentry, Silas, Everett, Harper, Isla, and Atley Eleanor Snyder and Hannah DeForest; her many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins; and her many friends.

Funeral service will be held Friday, January 22, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha, Kansas.  Viewing will be Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Interment will be in the Morrill Cemetery in Morrill, Kansas.  Memorial contributions may be left to the NorthRidge Building Fund, sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, KS 66534.
