Elmo Vernon Long, 88, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Life Care Center of Seneca, Seneca, KS.

He was born February 23, 1922 at Tescott, KS, the son of Martha Ann Roller and Everett Henry Long. He attended country grade school and Ada High School. He married Mary Catheryn Smith, November 17, 1941. She preceded Elmo in death on March 11, 2005. They were married for 63 years.

Elmo served in the US Army for three years, in Manila, Philippines and at Bauang, Northern Luzon. After his discharge he attended Diesel Engine School in Chicago Ill., following completion of the diesel mechanic course he worked for an International Harvester dealer in Paola, KS. Elmo also farmed southwest of Centralia, KS for 10 years. Elmo lived in Manhattan, KS and worked Kansas State University as a Power Plant Operator for 12 yrs.

Elmo was a member of Masonic Lodge and The American Legion post at Paola, KS. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church in Paola and Frankfort, KS.

Elmo is survived by three daughters Karen Jean Smith of Weatherby, MO, Elaine Marie Lovell of Lawrence, KS and Phyllis Jo Leavell of Spring Hill, KS; and one sister Maxine Sisson of Manhattan, KS, seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the Popkess Mortuary in Seneca, KS. Mr. Long will lie in state all day Tuesday at the funeral home and there will be a family visitation Tuesday evening from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Pastor Marilyn Sweet will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Vermillion Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Memorials are being left to the donor's choice and may be sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary, Seneca, KS.
