Frances Burks

Frances Marie Burks, 92, formerly of Summerfield, KS died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.

Frances was born June 8, 1914 the daughter of Walter Arthur Sunderland and Ellen Barbara Law in Vermillion, Kansas. She graduated from Beattie High School. On February 11, 1935 she married Kyle Levoy Burks at Seneca, Kansas. He preceded her in death of May 3, 1991.

Kyle and Frances owned and operated the Firestone and Oliver dealership in Summerfield, KS until 1956 when they moved to Longmont CO where Frances worked as a secretary to a real estate broker. She later acquired her own real estate broker's license and operated the Hygiene Realty business until 1974. She then retired and Kyle and Frances traveled and helped family and friend until 1977 when they settled in Topeka, KS. While in Topeka Frances volunteered many hours of her time at the Stormont Vail Hospital and other organizations in Topeka. Then in 1995 she was recognized as" Topeka Volunteer of the Year".

Frances was very active at the Twin Oaks Retirement Center in Lansing that she called home from 2000 - 2007. She actively played pinochle quite regularly at the retirement center. She was past matron of the Eastern Star formerly of Summerfield. While living in Summerfield she was a member of the Summerfield Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two brothers, Richard Burks, Protem, MO and Raymond Burks, Chelsea, OK; two daughters, Joan LaChance-Vieux, Leavenworth, KS and Kylene Stoll, Summerfield, KS; a sister Della Mae Osborne, Portland, Washington; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday, April 23, 2007 at the Summerfield Presbyterian Church at 1:00 pm. Rev. Herb Schrader conducted the services and Jackie Cameron played the organ while Herb Schrader sang "In the Garden". Burial was in the Vermillion Cemetery. Casket bearers were Mike Lansing, Mike Burks, Rick Stoll, Josh Jones, Jim Metzler and Doug Werner.
