Franklin Hertzel

F ranklin Duane Hertzel, 79, of Sabetha, KS passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Sabetha Community Hospital after a three-year battle with cancer.

Franklin was born to Frank and Amanda (Neuman) Hertzel in Beatrice, Nebraska on May 13, 1934, on Mother’s Day. When he was ten, he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska with his parents and two siblings. He attended Lincoln Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln North East High School with the class of 1953.

He married Ruth LaVerne Meyer on October 9 th , 1954. Together they have four children.

Frank and Ruth moved to Sabetha in 1961. He retired from Wenger Manufacturing after 32 years.

Frank enjoyed hunting and fishing, tending to his lawn and garden, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church for 52 years.

Frank is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 59 years, two sons, Gerry (Ellen) of Sabetha, David (Camille) of Baldwin City, KS, and two daughters, Karen Heiniger (Cedric) of Sabetha, and Kristy Schweitzer (Brian) of Morrill, KS. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryker Schweitzer, a brother, Jim Hertzel and a sister, Wilma Wickline.

Visitation will be Wednesday July 10 th at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be Thursday July 11 th at the Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Sabetha. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sabetha Community Hospital or the Community Food Pantry of Sabetha, sent in care of the funeral home, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, KS 66538.
