E ugene A. (Gene) Niehues, 76, of Sabetha, Kansas died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
Gene was born October 20, 1939 to Bernard and Alfreda (Kramer) Niehues at home on the family farm near Corning, Kansas. Gene was the 3rd of twelve children. He learned the value of hard work dropping out of school to help support his family at the age of 15. Gene was employed by Ed Montgomery on their family dairy farm. Gene was also a member of the Kansas National Guard for several years. He started hauling milk from the farm to market in 1970; followed by the purchase of milk routes becoming Niehues Trucking, Inc. Farming was also a love that he enjoyed with his son and brother.
Gene married D’Ann (Strahm) Niehues on February 23, 1963 in Sabetha, Kansas.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Jimmy and Jerry. He is survived by his wife, D’Ann of 53 years; daughters, Lana (Ryan) Wells of Fairview, Kansas and Heidi (Heath) Lawson of Afton, Wyoming; son Jarrod (Kim) Niehues of Sabetha, Kansas; grandchildren Riley (Ali) Wells, Jordyn Wells, Bradee Stuke, Westin Niehues, Jason Lawson, Alek Lawson, Cooper Lawson, Tayt Lawson and a great-grandson, Bane Joseph Wells; and nine brothers and sisters: Mary Ann, Lester, Velma, Linda, Gladys, Donna, Sonny, Virginia, and Joe and their spouses and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha. A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 with a parish rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Sabetha Community Hospital, sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
