George Franklin Hervey Jr., 97, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away peacefully and went home to be with Jesus, on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas.
George was born on September 7, 1925, the son of George F. Hervey Sr. and Minnie M. (Haase) Hervey in Manhattan, Kansas. George grew up on farms in Riley and Jefferson counties. He graduated from Rock Creek High School in Jefferson County in 1943. In high school, George played baseball and basketball.
On March 2, 1946, George enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and spent his service time at air bases near San Antonio, San Francisco, and El Paso. In 1945, George met Alice Bartram of Sabetha and they married on January 3, 1947. They were married for 70 years until Alice’s death on May 18, 2017.
In 1948, George began working at the Veterans Administrative Hospital in Topeka, Kansas and spent the next 32 years as a V.A. Hospital Administrator in Topeka, San Diego, California, and Omaha, Nebraska until his retirement in 1980. George was always a handy carpenter, and he built his first home in Topeka in 1951. After retiring, he built another home near Silver Lake, Kansas. In 1990, George and Alice moved to Mesa, Arizona where they spent winters for several years. In 2005, they moved to Sabetha.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice Hervey; his two sisters, Opal Stuessie and Shirley Richards; and his brother, John Hervey.
George is survived by his two brothers, Dan (Sue) Hervey of McPherson, Kansas, and Don (Lea Ann) Hervey of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sister, Elain Ellenwood of Papillion, Nebraska; his sister-in-law, Roma Hervey of Sabetha; many nieces and nephews including Sally (Jim) Kissel of Wetmore, Kansas, Gerald (Cass) Hervey, Betty Anne (Lester) Niehues, and Carmen (Michael) Oom all of Sabetha; many great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great-nieces and nephews; and long-time special friend, Evelyn Strough.
