Gerald Torrey

March 24, 1938 — March 5, 2011

Gerald R. Torrey, 72, of Axtell Kansas passed away March 5 th 2011 at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Seneca Kansas.

He was born March 24, 1938 in Frankfort, KS, the son of Nelson “Bob” and Mary (Henry) Torrey. He graduated from Axtell High School in 1956.

Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960. On June 25 th , 1959, he married Carol Ford.

Jerry worked for National Cash Register “NCR” for 16 years (1960-1976)n 1973 Jerry and Carol owned and operated the Torrey Bus Service until 1979. He went to work for Blue Valley Telephone in 1976 and retired as plant manager in 2002. After retirement Jerry and Carol enjoyed several years traveling and just enjoying retirement.

Survivors include his wife Carol, sons Robert, Andy & wife Denise, all of Axtell, and two Grandsons, Shane of Axtell and Matthew and wife Rachel of Wichita, Kansas. Brothers, Jim and wife Kathy of Sabetha, and Bill of Axtell. Sisters JoAnn Welliver of Kansas City, and Phyllis Turney and husband Dick of Overland Park. Gerald has numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, son Leroy, brother Raymond, and sister Sue Durland.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday March 8 th 2011 at 10:00 am at the St, Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Father Albert Hauser OSB will be celebrant. A rosary will be prayed at Monday March 7 th at 7:30 at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Axtell. Burial will be in the St. Michaels Cemetery, Axtell, KS. Casket bearers are Kent Kuckelman, Chad Stunkel, Brad Huddleston, Ben Owens, Marc Bryant, Buster Schmitz. Honorary casket bearers are Galen Walters, Dick Oestreich, Bob Baker, Terry O’Neil, Don Butler, Bill Hellmer.

Memorials will be designated at a later date but can be sent to the “Gerald Torrey Memorial Fund” in care of the Landreth-Popkess Funeral Home, Axtell, KS.
