Grace Close

Grace M. Close was born on August 6, 1913 the daughter of Charles Frederick Schneider and Sarah Elizabeth Dummermuth Schneider in Richardson County, Nebraska. She was one of four children born to this union. She grew up in the Richardson County area and attended Honey Creek School. She attended Sabetha schools and graduated from Sabetha High School. She was united in marriage to Donald Alfred Close on April 23, 1939. Two children were born to this union. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha. She was an avid knitter, specializing in Christmas stockings and has knitted over 500 stockings for relatives and friends.


Grace died on June 7, 2009 at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Close on August 22, 1971; one brother, Raymond Schneider; two sisters, Bertha Stalder and Ruby Schneider; a son-in-law, Jerry Wood. She is survived by a son, Phil Close and his wife, Linda of Salina, Kansas; a daughter, Linda Wood of Derby, Kansas; five grandchildren, Christy Wulf, Cathy Orgeron, Becky Wood, Lori Jefferson and Brian Close; five great grandchildren, Harrison Wulf, Madison Wulf, Hailey Orgeron, Alex Orgeron and Emily Orgeron.


Funeral services will be Friday, June 12, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. A family visitation will be Thursday evening 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Cotton Public Library or CobbleStone Court sent in care of the funeral home.
