Harvey Rokey

December 14, 1909 — September 9, 2011

Harvey Andrew Rokey passed away on September 9, 2011 at the age of 101. He enjoyed a rich, full life in Nemaha County.   His genuine belief in people, kindness and courtesy towards others, as well as his sense of humor will be long remembered. Harvey was well respected and called friend by many in Nemaha County and beyond.
Harvey Rokey was born December 14, 1909. Harvey was a lifelong Nemaha County resident, born the eldest child to Oney and Minnie (Strahm) Rokey.    His siblings Iona Rokey Kaul, Dorothy Rokey Zug and Ned Rokey all preceded him in death. Brother Captain Ray Rokey died in World War II in Germany in 1944.
Harvey grew up in the Berwick area and attended school in Berwick #62.
He married Pauline Stone on May 6, 1934 and was devoted to her for over 66 years until her death in 2002. They had no children. However, Harvey was the source of family history and an inspiration to his nieces and nephews. After he and Pauline were married, they moved to a farm in Corning and later took over Pauline’s family home in the Woodlawn area where they lived and farmed for many years.
After retiring from farming, they made their home in Sabetha where Pauline taught generations of first graders. Retiring from farming did not mean a rocking chair for Harvey. He served two terms as Nemaha County Commissioner from 1971 to 1978 and served on the board of directors for Berwick Oil Co-op.   Many friends and neighbors will remember his community service from those years.
Harvey and Pauline traveled extensively. They were proud of the fact that they had visited all states except for Alaska and North Dakota. They also made trips to France, Germany and Switzerland.
He is survived by loving nieces and nephews, colleagues and friends.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. A visitation will be one hour prior to service time. The interment will be made in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Albany Historical Society sent in care of the funeral home.
