Henry Olberding, Jr. 86, formerly of the Axtell area died Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Life Care Center of Seneca, KS.
Henry was born on March 30, 1924 to Henry F. and Mary Runnebaum Olberding on the family farm in rural Baileyville, Kansas. He attended Dewey Country School, north of Baileyville where he graduated from the 8 th grade. He worked as a farm laborer for his parents and neighbors until the age of 21. He was married to Evelyn Margaret Deters on December 27, 1945 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville, KS. They lived and farmed in Axtell, Kansas for four years. Henry then became a lineman for the Nemaha-Marshall Rural Electric Co-op located in Axtell in 1953. He retired after 36 years of dedicated service in 1989. His social activities included spending time playing cards (he especially liked poker) and helping those in his community with farm activities. He enjoyed farming, fixing fence with his grandsons, attending cattle and household auctions. His interest in cattle continued throughout his life into his 80’s. After he retired, he and Evelyn enjoyed traveling in their motor home to visit family and friends. Evelyn died on February 22, 1996 at the age of 67. He was married to LaVonne Root in April of 1997. He was a member of St Micheal’s Catholic Church of Axtell, Kansas. He was a resident at Life Care Center in Seneca, Kansas, where he visited with family and friends, played bingo and watched old western movies at the time of his death.
Survivors include one son, Gerald Olberding and wife Reita of Princeton, Kansas; three daughters, Linda Buessing and husband Maurice of Axtell, Kansas, Mary Munger and husband Jim of Topeka, Kansas and Donna Cahill and husband Larry of Shawnee, Kansas; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Bevins of Harrisburg, Oregon and Millie Bontrager of Seneca, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn; one son, Galen Olberding; one granddaughter, Cheri Olberding; four brothers; Cyril, Leonard, Alvin, Aloysius; two sisters; Frances Boltz and Marie Stallbaumer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 20 th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell, KS with Father Albert Hauser, OSB officiating. Casket bearers are Bill Buessing, Brian Buessing, Dale Buessing, Hank Cahill, Anita Cox, Gale Eubanks, Chris Munger, Tyler Munger and Bruce Olberding. Burial will be in the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation and rosary will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell on Friday, November 19 th at 7:30 p.m. Landreth-Popkess Funeral home of Axtell is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is established to the St. Michael’s Catholic Grade School with Landreth-Popkess Funeral Home in charge.
