James Schafer

James Clinton Schafer, 103, of Vermilion, KS died Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the East Ridge Care Home in Centralia.

James was born May 29, 1906 in Vermillion to Clinton Schafer and Georgia Jessee Schafer.

After graduating from the Vermilion High School he farmed with his father raising cattle, hogs and sheep. He married Lois Parli of Axtell, KS in September 1931.

In 1937 he became a rural mail carrier for route 2 north of Vermillion until he retired after 30 years of service.

At an early age he joined the Vermillion Christian Church. He loved nature and the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife of 74 years Lois, a brother Paul Schafer, three sisters; Helen Smith, Laura Reinbach, and Gertrude Shepherd.

Jim is survived by a daughter, Joyce Elaine Loughary, one son, Col. James Richard Schafer; Six grandchildren, eleven great grand children and two great great grandchildren.

Cremation is planned and a private graveside service will be held in the Vermillion Cemetery at a later date. The Landreth-Popkess Funeral Home in Axtell, KS is in charge of arrangements.
