Larry Dean Grose

Larry Dean Grose, 65, of Bern, Kansas passed away unexpectedly at the family farm on Thursday, January 19, 2023.

Larry was born on October 13, 1957, to Leonard and LaRae (Chandler) Grose in Seneca, Kansas.  After graduating from Bern High School, Larry worked various jobs as a farm hand, and ran a milk route with his father.  In addition to maintaining a farm, Larry also sold insurance for 36 years, first for Faye Minton in Sabetha, Kansas and then the last 30 years for Saylor Insurance Service in Sabetha.  Larry also obtained his license as a real estate agent and later his broker's license for Rolling Hills Realty in Sabetha.  On December 30, 2022, Larry retired from the insurance business.

Larry was married to Joyce (Glissman) Grose on July 10, 1976, in Kelly, Kansas, and they were blessed with 46 wonderful years together.  The Bern community was always their home and Larry was an active member of the community.  He was on the Bern United Methodist Church council, coached softball, and coached high school boys' and girls' basketball for the Bern Indians.  For many years during the summer, he also coached girls' Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB).  He loved fireworks and was instrumental in starting the annual Bern 4th of July Fireworks display.  To this day, the Bern 4th of July Fireworks and Celebration is the biggest event the Bern community holds.

Larry had many interests in life.  Larry and his friend, LeRoy Strathman, ran a cattle herd under the name of L & L for 20 years.  He also loved watching sports especially the Kansas City Chiefs and he was an avid gun collector.  Every summer he spent countless hours in the garden at the farm and he shared his produce with family and friends.  Larry left a lasting impression on everyone he met, and everyone always had a favorite story to share about him.  He was well known for the best one-liners and could make anyone laugh.  Larry didn’t know a stranger and he was always the life of the party.  He was proud of his family and loved spending time with them, and he shared a close bond with his father and his two brothers.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, the Bern and Sabetha communities, and everyone that had the privilege of knowing him.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, LaRae Grose in 1989.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Grose, of Bern; his three children, Emily (Justin) Dultmeier of Topeka, Kansas, Brian (Melanie) Grose of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Hannah (Brett) Karlin of Shawnee, Kansas; his eight grandchildren, Tyson, Alexis, Bailey, Kennedy, Charlotte, Wyatt, Brooklyn, and Beckham; his father, Leonard (Rosie) Grose of Bern; his two brothers, LaVern (Rita) Grose of Bern and Leslie (Katie) Grose of Meriden, Kansas; and numerous relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha.  Visitation will be held on Monday evening, January 30, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the NorthRidge Church.  The interment will be made in the Bern Cemetery in Bern, Kansas.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Bern Community Support Foundation of Bern, Kansas sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Street, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
