LaVon Sperline

LaVon E. Sperline, 92 of Sabetha died March 10, 2009 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. LaVon was born September 10, 1916 near Bern, Kansas, the son of Earl Sperline and Ruby (Aumiller) Sperline.


Lavon grew up in the Bern and Sabetha area. He married Morna Feek on December 15, 1938 in Sabetha. He farmed with his father until 1950 and then leased the Sinclair filling station in Morrill. In 1955 he moved to Horton where he leased a Skelly filling station for a couple of years. Lavon then moved back to Morrill in 1957 where he owned and operated a Standard filling station until his retirement in 1998.


Lavon was an excellent pool and snooker shooter. He also spent a great deal of time hunting, trapping, and fishing in his younger years. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and went to five world horseshoe tournaments and many other state tournaments.


Lavon was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Ruby; his son, John Sperline in 1990; his brother, Meredith Sperline; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Backer.


He is survived by his wife Morna Sperline of Sabetha; a son, Ronnie Sperline and his wife Joyce of Morrill, Kansas; a daughter-in-law, Aurora Sperline of Morrill, Kansas; 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.


Funeral services will be held Friday, March 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. A visitation will be held Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at the Morrill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be left to the Morrill Community Building Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.
