Lawrence Shump

August 7, 1917 — January 1, 2010

Lawrence John Shump, 92, died Friday, January 1, 2010 at the Sabetha Community Hospital. He was born on August 7, 1917 at the family home in Kelly, Kansas. He was the son of Frank Shump and Rose (Metzger) Shump. Lawrence was united in marriage to Dorothy (Haefele) Shump on June 5, 1947. Three daughters where born to this union. He worked for the Sabetha Community Hospital as a maintenance worker, did construction and farmed. He delivered the St. Joe paper which involved a 300 mile daily route. Lawrence worked for the City of Sabetha until retiring after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Sabetha. He was a Knights of Columbus member of the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, Kansas since 1943. He served in the National Guard from 1939-1942.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Shump and Rose Shump; six brothers, Gus Shump, Henry Shump, Vollie Shump, Raphael Shump, Karl Shump and Frank Shump; two sisters, Amelia Schneider and Pauline Surmeier; a grand daughter, Amy Dornes. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shump of 62 years in Sabetha; two daughters, Mary Dornes and her husband, Dan of Sabetha and Margaret Shump of Sabetha and Theresa Dressman and her husband, Myron of Frankfort, Kansas; two sisters, his twin sister, Laurina (Peggy) Heckel and Rose Hubbard both of California and 7 grandsons and 1 grand daughter.


Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha. A visitation will be held on Sunday evening 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Sabetha Community Hospital sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.
