Leona Durst

L eona E. Durst, 102, of Sabetha died Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Apostolic Christian Home. She was born on March 13, 1911 the daughter of William Shara and Frances (Kvasnicka) Shara at Narka, Kansas. She grew up in the Narka area and moved to Red Oak, Iowa for a short time after graduating from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s degree in teaching. She then moved to Morrowville, Kansas until 2002 when she moved to the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. She was united in marriage to Floyd “Dick” Durst on November 26, 1936 in Ashland, Kansas. They adopted two children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd “Dick” Durst on May 10, 1997; a son, Charles Leroy Durst; a daughter, Janet Kay Ryan and a grandson, Michael Ryan. She is survived by three grandsons, Robert Ryan, LaVern Durst and Daniel Ryan, three granddaughters, Charlotte Engelman, Deborah Farmer-Yonkey and Charlene Wilhelm.
Private family memorial services will be Friday, January 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with public visitation to follow from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The inurnment will be private by the family in the Morrowville Cemetery in Morrowville, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Teacher’s Association sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.
