Leonard Lee Grose

Leonard Lee Grose, 88, of rural Bern, Kansas passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at the Sabetha Community Hospital. 

Leonard was born to Hiram and Mary (Bauman) Grose on August 28, 1934, on the family farm between Oneida and Bern, Kansas.  Leonard attended Victory 99 Country School for eight years.  Then, he attended high school in Oneida and graduated in 1951.

On May 8, 1955, Leonard was united in marriage to LaRae Chandler, and they were blessed with three sons, Larry, LaVern, and Leslie.  Leonard and LaRae were married for 34 years until LaRae passed away suddenly on September 19, 1989.  Leonard then married Rose E. Grose on June 1, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  They enjoyed 30 years of marriage.

Leonard was a member of the United States Army Reserves, and in November of 1962, he was honorably discharged.  Leonard had a strong work ethic and worked most of his life at Mid-America Dairymen, Inc.  At Mid-America, he worked inside the plant, hauled milk, and eventually, worked as a field representative.  While working at Mid America, Leonard also farmed, and he raised cattle and hogs.  In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.  Leonard was a member of the Bern United Methodist Church where he served on several committees.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, LaRae; his sister, Eugenia Heiniger; and his son, Larry, on January 19, 2023.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Rose E. Grose; his daughter-in-law, Joyce Grose of Bern; his two sons, LaVern (Rita) Grose of Bern, and Leslie (Katie) Grose of Meriden, Kansas; his seven grandchildren, Emily (Justin) Dultmeier, Brian (Melanie) Grose, Hannah (Brett) Karlin, Nicole (Ryan) Brune, Kevin (Michelle) Grose, Sarah Grose, and Miranda Grose; his thirteen great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Aurellia Mikinski of Linwood, Kansas and Mary Kaye (Morris) Leuthold of Bern; his step-daughter, Linda (Joseph) Patterson of Leawood, Kansas and their children, Drew and Deirdre, and Deirdre’s daughter, Scarlett; his step-son, Rick Grose of Topeka, Kansas; and his numerous family and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bern United Methodist Church.  A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.  Contributions are suggested to the Bern Community Support Foundation sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
