Lois Duffy

Lois L. Duffy, age 97, Vermillion, died Feb. 21, 2010. She was born January 11, 1913 at Vermillion Kansas. Her parents were Clinton and Georgia Jessee Schafer.

She graduated from Vermillion High School and attended the Kansas State Teacher's College at Emporia, Kansas, and later Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas.

Mrs. Duffy was an Elementary School Teacher. She taught from 1932 until 1940 in Centralia Kansas and from 1962 until 1976 in the Frankfort Grade School in Frankfort Kansas.

She was married to Harold Arthur Duffy, August 4, 1940 at her parent's home in Vermillion. Harold died January 3, 1991. They lived in Florida and the Gulf States for the ten years following their marriage, while Mr. Duffy was working for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. They moved back to Vermillion in 1950 and purchased the Smith Hardware Store, which they operated for the Next 30 years.

Mrs. Duffy was a lifelong member of the Christian Church of Vermillion and a Sunday School Teacher form many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and 1 great grandson.

Survivors include 1 son, Jim Duffy, Hays, 3 daughters, Deanna Balaun, Marysville, Carol Bennett, Vermillion, and Linda Gresham of Auburn, Al. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday February 26, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Christian Church in Vermillion. Rev. Virgil Warren will conduct the services and Ruth Ann Warren will be the accompanist and Kris Bennett, Andy Jones and Tim Jones will provide special music. Casket bearers are Todd Surdez, Jim Balaun, Dan Balaun, Tim Jones, Andy Jones and Kris Bennett. Honorary Casket bearers are Aaron Gresham, Kelsey Duffy and Spencer Balaun. Burial will be in the Vermillion Cemetery, Vermillion, KS.

Memorials are being left to the Lois Duffy Memorial Fund; a specific charity will be named at a later date.

Her closed casket will lie in state for one hour prior to funeral time at the church.
