Lois Irene Grote, 88, of Sabetha was born on November 26, 1922 at Sabetha, Kansas. She was the youngest child of four children born to Clinton and Anna (Nance) Kreitzer. She went home to be with her savior on May 17, 2011.
Lois attended Sabetha schools and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1940. She then went to MacPherson College and earned her teaching certificate. She later completed her degree at Peru State College in 1967. Her teaching career spanned many years as she taught at Victory, Powhattan, Oneida, Morrill and retired from the B&B- St. Benedict schools.
She married Harold C. Grote on July 23, 1942, and to this union where born five children. They enjoyed traveling and taking their children on many summer vacations. Later in life they still enjoyed traveling to scenic places and took up square dancing. Harold passed away in July of 1996 on their 54 th wedding anniversary.
Early in life Lois chose to serve God and was baptized at the Trinity Church of the Brethren where she remained a lifelong member. She served her church in many capacities, including being an adult Sunday school teacher for many years.
Lois enjoyed people, going to meetings, and growing flowers. She was a member of BPW, QFL, Retired Teachers Association, NARF, Christian Women’s Club, card clubs, and various other organizations. In 1991, she was named BPW Women of the Year. Her love of flower gardening was well evidenced every spring and summer around her home.
Among her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. She was a loving, caring and giving mother. She was devoted in her care of son, Larry who had a lifelong battle with muscular dystrophy. In later years she helped care for her sisters as they were in failing health.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Grote; three sons, Larry Grote, Roger Grote and Paul Grote; two sisters, Marion Scott and Maxine Nemeth; one brother, Howard Kreitzer. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Cox and her husband, Jerry of Sabetha; a son, Stan Grote and his wife, Rose of Bayard, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Chris Grote of Sabetha and 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephew.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Church of the Brethren in Sabetha. Visitation will be Monday evening 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Home, or the Trinity Church of the Brethren sent in care of the funeral home.
