L uella L. McKenney, 92, of Sabetha, died early Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Sabetha Manor.
She was born May 11, 1922 on the family farm in Brown County near White Cloud, Kansas, daughter of William Ernest “Ernie” and Minnie Raney Butrick. Luella was the third of eight children who reached adulthood.
Luella attended Hilltop Grade School and White Cloud High School. She was married to Dana Augustus McKenney on December 21, 1938. Four children were born to this union, Dana Ernest, James Richard, Mary Luella and Albert Duane.
She was a homemaker until all her children were in school, she then went to work at Nabb’s Café, followed by the M&M Café, The Red Rooster and Fulton’s Tavern (Lou’s) until her health forced her to retire. After retirement she continued to be an avid gardener, she enjoyed cooking and liked to sew-making quilts for many of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she loved working with her flowers.
Her husband, her only daughter and eldest son all preceded Luella in death. She is survived by two sons, James of Sabetha, KS and Albert of Wichita, KS; one brother, Donald Butrick of Hiawatha and one sister, Darlene Rison of Sabetha. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.
