Marie Owens

April 19, 1912 — February 3, 2008

Marie Owens was born on April 19, 1912 the daughter of Irl and Maggie (Shuster) Baker on a farm near Ozawkie, Kansas the oldest of four girls.

Marie graduated from Ozawkie High School and entered the Bethany Methodist School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated as a register nurse in 1933.

Marie was united in marriage to Willard H. Wyer of Kansas City, Kansas on August 30, 1935. They later divorced. She worked at Security Benefit Hospital in Topeka from 1942 to 1956. She later married Marshall E. Evans in Topeka, Kansas on July 19, 1960 while working at the office of Drs. Powers and Preston.

Upon retiring in 1966 she and Marshall retired to Florida where they built a new home on Longboat Key. They moved to Leesburg, Florida in 1975 where Marshall died. She later married Reverend Evan R. Owners of Leesburg. He died on February 26, 1990. She moved to the Lake Port Square Retirement Center in Leesburg, Florida in 1990.

She returned to Kansas in 1995 residing in the Apostolic Christian West Village Apartments in Sabetha. Marie was a member of the Sabetha Methodist Church.


Marie died on February 3, 2008 at the Apostolic Christian Home at the age of 95.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mildred Brey.

She is survived by two sisters, Bernice Brunton of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Dorothy Flott of Sabetha, Kansas and 2 nieces and 5 nephews.



A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 10:30 PM at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sabetha Methodist Church or the Sabetha Community Hospital sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.
