Mary Lee Stephens

Mary Lee Stephens, 86, of Seneca, Kansas, passed away Friday, November 11, 2022, at Oakley Place in Seneca.

Mary was born on September 29, 1936 in Goff, Kansas, the daughter of William Ward Sourk and Mary (Capsey) Sourk.  She married Norman Lee Stephens on August 14, 1955, in Goff, Kansas.  Norman passed away on April 9, 2011 in Americus, Kansas.

Mary was a devoted mother to her children, and worked outside the home in retail until her retirement.  She was an active member of the Americus First United Methodist Church where she served on numerous boards.  Also, she was involved in the women’s clubs, and the yearly roundup mission for clothes at the church.  In addition, Mary was instrumental in creating the Back to School supply drive for the K-8 children in the Americus schools.  She volunteered at the Lyon County Extension Office in Emporia Kansas, and as a Cub Scout den mother for her sons’ scout group in Wichita, Kansas.

One of Mary’s greatest joys was watching her sons’ ballgames which later evolved into cheering on her grandchildren during their sporting events.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Douglas Eugene Stephens.

She is survived by her three sons, David (Carol) Stephens of Springdale, Arkansas, Brian (Ruth) Stephens of Olathe, Kansas, and Donald (Pamela) Stephens of Onaga, Kansas; her sister, Virginia Cook of Parsons, Kansas; her brother, Edward (Helen) Sourk of Hiawatha, Kansas; her five grandchildren; and her twelve great-grandchildren.
