Melvin Lawrence Livengood was born on August 11, 1912 the son of Lawrence Frank Livengood and Delta Mae McKinnie Livengood.He was one of four children born to this union. He grew up in the Morrill area and attended Sabetha schools and graduated from Sabetha High School.


After graduation he worked for Gibbs Clothing Store in Topeka, Kansas as a men's suit and clothing buyer.


Melvin was united in marriage to Alyce Sally Baumgartner on June 19, 1938 in Topeka, Kansas.


Melvin was drafted and entered the United States Army where he served in Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Germany and Africa he received the Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge.


When he was discharged from the Army he went to work in advertising for the Landeene Advertising Company. He purchased a portion of the business and changed the name to Neon Advertising and worked there until his retirement. . Mel was a member of the Sabetha V.F.W. Post #7285, John L. Palmer American Legion Post #126 of Sabetha, the Arab Temple Shrine of Topeka, and a member of the First United Methodist Church.


Melvin died on April 11, 2008 at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alyce Livengood on April 20, 2003; a brother, Gerald Livengood; two sisters, Lorene Stone and Hazel Stover on June 16, 2002 and a nephew, Gary Stover in 1984.


Melvin is survived by a sister-in-law, Eula Swanson of Sabetha; one niece and three nephews.


Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha with military honors will be conducted by the Sabetha V.F.W. Post #7285.


A family visitation will be Tuesday evening 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. The entombment will in at the Mount Hope Mausoleum in Topeka at 12:30 P.M with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Home or the First United Methodist Church sent in care of the funeral home.
