Melvin Sell, Sr.

August 10, 1917 — April 30, 2011

Melvin Arthur Sell, Sr. was born on August 10, 1917 the son of Carl Sell and Ora (Minnium) Sell in Weeping Water, Nebraska. He was the oldest of nine children. He attended and graduated from Plattsmouth High School in 1936.   He entered the United States Army on February 21, 1941 and served four years. He received an honorable discharge on March 14, 1945. He was united in marriage to E. DeLoma Dooley on September 29, 1946. Five children were born to this union.   He attended and graduated from Miltonvale Wesleyan College in June of 1955. He then taught in Oak hill, Kansas for 6 years. He then graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelors and a Masters degree in teaching in August of 1966. He taught in Sabetha, Kansas from 1960 to 1983. He was a devoted member of the Sabetha Wesleyan Church and a member of the retired teacher’s association.

Melvin died on April 30, 2011 at the Horton Hospital at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, E. DeLoma Sell on December 18, 1999; one sister and three brothers. He is survived by five children, Cheryl Beyer of Ottawa, Kansas, Judy Studer of Sterling, Illinois, Melvin Sell, Jr. of Waskom, Texas, Doug Sell of Dell Rapids, South Dakota and Diana Yoble of Horton, Kansas; two sisters, Lova Bushnell of Kadoka, South Dakota and Lois Dowse of Grand Island, Nebraska; two brothers, Bob Sell of La Vista, Nebraska and Jim Sell of Iowa and 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sabetha Wesleyan Church. A visitation will be Monday evening 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sabetha Wesleyan Church, Cobblestone Court or the Horton Hospital sent in care of the funeral home.
