Nancy Montgomery

Nancy Montgomery, 90, of Sabetha, Kansas died Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at the Apostolic Christian Home, and was reunited with her husband and the love of her life, Donald Montgomery.

Nancy was born on the family farm northwest of Powhattan, Kansas on May 11, 1932.  She was the youngest of two children born to Glenn and Mabel (Peterson) Patton.  A lifelong resident of Northeast Kansas, she grew up in Fairview, Kansas and later Topeka, Kansas and graduated from Topeka High School in 1950.  A young Donald Montgomery caught her eye with his 1950 Ford Crestline and the rest is history.  They were married on June 21, 1953 and celebrated 67 wonderful years of marriage. They loved to “cut a rug” and some of Nancy’s fondest memories, that she shared with others, were of Donald swinging her around the dance floor.

Nancy and Donald lived on the farm and raised their family in Sabetha, a community that she held near and dear to her heart.  Almost everyone knew her as “Fancy Nancy,” and she was Sabetha’s social butterfly.  She was always dressed to the nines, and no outfit was complete without her snazzy jewelry, glowing smile, and sassy smirk.  She had great fun playing golf, reading to children at the library, and being a part of many, many bridge clubs.  She was always on the go, whether it was meeting friends at the casino or driving her scooter up to Brick Street, she never missed an opportunity to laugh with her loved ones.

When she turned 90 this past May, she was tickled with joy from all the cards she received from friends, family, and community members.  It was very clear that she made so many people feel loved and special.  Nancy always found a reason to celebrate, and she made it clear (because one of her many talents was speaking her mind) that her funeral was to be no exception. So, whether it is enjoying some fried chicken, drinking a red beer, listening to some Frank Sinatra, or playing a game of Bridge, join us in celebrating a life well lived, and a rest that is well deserved.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, on December 7, 2020; and her sister, Pat Loyd of Hiawatha, Kansas.

She is survived by her two sons, Steve (Annie) Montgomery and Kevin (Tammy) Montgomery both of Sabetha; her grandchildren, Anderson (Trisha) Montgomery, Nick (Ronna) Montgomery, Heaven (Ryan) Schuette, and Taylor Montgomery and her fiancé Christian Bridges; her great-grandchildren Cole, Parker, Abby, Lilly, Hadlee, Abram, Emerson, Collin, Tanith, and McCallister; many wonderful nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha.  A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the church.  She will be peacefully laid to rest in the Albany Cemetery.  Nancy will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at the Popkess Mortuary.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sabetha Community Hospital, or the Mary Cotton Public Library sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
