Neoma Eichenberger

Neoma (Wisdom) Eichenberger, 98, passed away on April 7, 2009 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas. She was born on December 29, 1910 the daughter of Jesse Wisdom and Lizzie (Mincher) Wisdom in Richardson County, Nebraska where she attended a country school before the family moved to a farm near Bern, Kansas. Neoma finished her elementary education at the Taylor Rapids School before graduating from the Bern High School in 1928. After attending summer school following graduation, she began her teaching career in the fall of 1928 at Ehrsam School for three years before her marriage to Gottlieb Eichenberger on August 16, 1931. After marriage, they moved to their first farm south of Sabetha, and in later years moved to their second farm before moving to Sabetha in 1970. Neoma attended Highland Junior College before obtaining her Bachelors Degree in Education at Peru College in Peru, Nebraska in 1963. Neoma's main objective as a teacher was for her students to have good reading and writing skills before reaching their upper elementary grades. She taught all 8 grades in various country schools in Nemaha County before teaching at Fairview and Hiawatha at which time she retired in 1976. Neoma taught a total of 34 years in addition to her substituting.


Neoma was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Sabetha. After retirement, Neoma enjoyed being a member of the Sabetha Garden Club, First Congregational Church Women's Fellowship, Nemaha County Retired Teachers, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Sabetha Hospital Guild and enjoyed attending the monthly birthday breakfasts with friends. In her retirement years, Neoma enjoyed traveling with her family.


Preceding her in death was her parents; her husband, Gottlieb Eichenberger on March 13, 1978; a son-in-law, Robert Glenn; a brother, Irvin Wisdom; a sister, Utah Barker. Neoma is survived by her daughter, Mavis Glenn of Topeka, Kansas; a brother, Leonard Wisdom of Easton, Kansas and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 10, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Family visitation will be Thursday evening 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nemaha County Home Health & Hospice, Sabetha Community Hospital or the NorthRidge Church sent in care of the Funeral home.
