Opal Steiner

November 4, 1911 — September 18, 2014

O pal Lucille Steiner, 102, of Sabetha died Thursday, September 18, 2014 at the Sabetha Manor.  Opal was born on November 4, 1911 near Falls City, Nebraska the daughter of Anson and May (Brim) Knisely.

At a very early age she and her parents moved to a farm home on Pennsylvania Avenue north of Morrill.  Opal received her grade school training at the rural school known as the Heikes or Pennsylvania Avenue School.  When she entered eighth grade the family returned to Falls City, Nebraska.  She graduated from Falls City High School and attended Peru State College and Emporia State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas.

In 1935, Opal and Edward Miller were united in marriage.  A few days later Edward passed away from a burst appendix.  Opal was teaching at Plum Creek rural school at this time.  She continued to teach a total of 8 terms in rural and Morrill Schools.

On August 29, 1943 Opal and Reuben Steiner were married.  They had one son, Robert.  They resided on a farm south of Sabetha where they farmed and established a farm equipment business.  She worked with her husband in that business until his death on August 13, 1972.  She continued to work in that business as bookkeeper for her son, Robert until the age of 92 in 2003.

She is preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother and her husbands.

She is survived by her son, Robert Steiner and his wife, Kathy; grandson, Jason Steiner and his wife, Angelia; granddaughter, Marilyn Oehm and her husband, Jeff; great grandsons, Cole Oehm and Jethro Steiner.

Funeral service is Monday, September 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha.  A visitation will be Sunday afternoon 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.  The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Church or to Nemaha County Home Health & Hospice sent in care of Popkess Mortuary 823 Virginia Sabetha, Kansas  66534.
