Renee Sue Schmitt

Renee Sue (Hartter) Schmitt, 69, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones.

Renee was born on March 21, 1957, to Wilbur and Inez (Rieger) Hartter. She was the youngest of eight children.

Renee’s life was woven with family, and she embraced life through simple, meaningful routines: caring for plants in the garden, staying active with regular workouts, and taking long walks that brought her clarity and calm.

Renee was known for her strong work ethic at CR Industries in Seneca, Kansas, where she was employed for 22 years. She later worked for 12 years at the Nemaha County Training Center in Sabetha.

Renee was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who found her greatest joy in her family's love and laughter. Though she has left this world, her love and legacy will live on through her family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Renee was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Kenny Hartter and Marilyn Blevins.

Renee is survived by her husband, Norman Schmitt; her beloved daughter, Shelley Bauman-Smith; her son-in-law, Rick Smith; her three treasured granddaughters, Laurel Smith, Ainsley Smith, and Harper Smith; and her siblings, Harvey Hartter, Lynn (Peggy) Hartter, Charles Hartter, Teresa (Don) Schuyler, Carolyn (Gary) Gilbert, and Norma Hartter.

A private family Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Nemaha County Home Health & Hospice in Sabetha and sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Street, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
