Robert Mesec

June 15, 1932 — January 8, 2009

On January 8, 2009, BOB MESEC passed away peacefully following a brief illness with cancer.

He was born June 15, 1932; son of John and Ann Mesec; raised in North Chicago and Waukegan, IL. It was there that basketball became an important part of Bob's life. This led him to Marquette University and The University of Tulsa where he enjoyed a fine basketball career. Bob always said that playing under Coach Clarence Iba was the most positive influence on his life. His competitive spirit led him to the game of golf which he enjoyed with family and friends at Riverbend Country Club as well as many industry, church and school outings.

Bob was a dedicated Phillips Petroleum Company employee for 38 years. He and his family moved to numerous cities and states, making lifelong friends along the way. Bob's final move to Houston in 1978 totally energized him with great friends and work in crude oil marketing. It was Bob's honor to serve as a deacon at Second Baptist Church where he was also active in the Ticket to Heaven Bible Study class.

He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Rita; his son Mark, wife Christy and grandchildren Nick and Brittany; his daughter Susan, husband Eric Wiscavage and grandsons Jack and Sam; his daughter Jill, husband Steve Sandbo and grandchildren Stephen, Brooke and Drew. Bob is also survived by his sister, Blanche Prorok, sister-in-law, Barbara DeLand and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway, Houston TX 77057; 713-465-3408. All guests and friends are invited to join the family at a reception following the service.

Graveside services will be Friday January 16, 2009 at 11:30 AM at the Vermillion Cemetery in Vermillion, KS. Pastor Virgil Warren will conduct the services. The Landreth-Popkess Funeral Home in Axtell, KS is in charge of the Kansas arrangements.

For those desiring, the family requests with gratitude that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to The University of Tulsa Athletic Department in the name of Bob Mesec. This would enable another young athlete to pursue their dream. The University of Tulsa 800 S. Tucker Dr. Tulsa OK 74104
