Roma Lea Hervey, 90, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
Roma was born on August 16, 1935, in Sabetha, Kansas, to William Ralph Bauman and Ollie Emma (Marthaler) Bauman. She grew up in Sabetha and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1953. After graduation, Roma attended Bethany Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kansas, where she earned her degree as a registered nurse.
While working at the Colmer-O’Neil Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, Roma met her future husband, John Hervey. They were married on August 7, 1960, at the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha, and were blessed with three children, Sally, Gerald, and Melissa. Roma and John made their home on the family farm, where they raised their family and lived for 61 years.
Roma was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. When her children were younger, Roma served as a 4-H Leader for the Busy Jayhawker 4-H Club. She was also a member of the DDD Extension Unit, Nemaha County Cattle Women, and the Sabetha Community Hospital Guild.
Family was important to Roma. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and organizing family gatherings for meals and special occasions. In her spare time, Roma was an avid reader and word search enthusiast.
Roma was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John, on November 6, 2021.
Roma is survived by her three children, Sally (Jim) Kissel of Wetmore, Kansas, Gerald (Cass) Hervey of Sabetha, and Melissa Harberts (Dennis Brown) of Larchwood, Iowa; her ten grandchildren; her eleven great-grandchildren; and her two sisters, Nellie Beckwith and Wilma Ackerman, both of Sabetha.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Before the service, a visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary. At the beginning of the service, the NW Missouri/NE Kansas Nurse Honor Guard will honor Roma’s years of service as a registered nurse. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery in Sabetha. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sabetha Community Hospital Guild, sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Street, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
