Scott McCorkle

Scott McCorkle, age 83, of Sabetha passed away Sunday, December 21, 2008, at the Sabetha Hospital, surrounded by family.


He was born October, 28, 1925, near Athol, Kansas, one of seven children of Harold and Mabel (Scott) McCorkle. Before graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a Parachutist. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.


Scott married Roma J. Norton on December 4, 1949, at an aunt and uncle's home near Denton, Montana. In 1957 he moved with his family to Sabetha. He was an over the road truck driver for 30 years before becoming a Nemaha County employee. After retiring he enjoyed gardening and being with his grandchildren.


Survivors include his wife Roma of Sabetha; two daughters, Sharon Clelland of Chanute, Kansas, and Norma J. Dyke and her husband Doug of Hamlin, Kansas; one son, Jeff McCorkle of Sabetha, Kansas; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by three sons, Carl in 1955, Darrell in 1961, and Dennis in 2006; his father and mother; and two brothers.


Funeral services will be Monday, December 29, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. A family visitation will be Sunday evening 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Athol, Kansas. A memorial contribution may be made to the Trinity Church of the Brethren in Sabetha, sent in care of the funeral home.
