Shirley Longberg

January 14, 1931 — October 2, 2018

S hirley Leta (Fiske) Longberg, 87, died peacefully surrounded by family on October 2, 2018.

She was born January 14, 1931 in Soldier, KS, and married Richard “Ben” Longberg on January 14, 1950.  Ben and Shirley raised their children in Sabetha, KS and later moved to Wichita to be closer to them.

She worked lovingly to raise her nine children, sacrificing as only a mother does.  After they all moved out, she used her expertise as a part-time daycare provider for several very special boys and girls.  She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, playing cards and having coffee with girlfriends.  Even at the care home in the last year, she helped clean up the dining room after meals.

Shirley was a 50-year member of the VFW Auxiliary 7285, the American Legion Auxiliary, and belonged to the Women’s Missionary Group at her church.  She held several offices in the VFW.

Preceded in death by her husband Ben; her parents, Sylva Edna Mack Fiske and Raymond H. Fiske; an infant son, Melvin Lee; sisters, Mary Catherine, Margaret, and Charlotte; a brother, Burton; and sons-in-law, Joe Schlotterbeck and John Sewell.

Survived by daughters, Colleen Souders (Tim), Carol Landen (Randy), Sheila Schlotterbeck, Edna Sewell (Todd Phillips), Valerie Dahlke (Kerry) and Mary Abraham (Mark); and sons, Fred (Margaret), Harold (Traci), and Richard (Jackie); 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Services are Monday, October 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Southwest Community Church, 3214 S. Edwards, Wichita.  Visitation also at the Church at 10:00 a.m.  Lunch will be served following the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southwest Community Church or Harry Hynes Hospice, sent in care of Baker Funeral Home, 6100 E Central Avenue Suite 201, Wichita, KS 67208.  Cremation and burial will be held at a later date.
