Sondra Chauza-Rice

Sondra Chauza-Rice was born on March 27, 1962 the daughter of Albert Chauza and Phyllis Moser Chauza in Axtell, Kansas. She attended school in Bern until her junior year when she went to Hiawatha High School and graduated in 1980. She went to Emporia State Teachers College and received a teaching certificate. She taught school for the Powhattan Kickapoo School for 8 years. She then taught school in Hiawatha School District for several years. She currently was working for Michael Goodman Construction as a secretary and sales representative. She was united in marriage to Jerry Rice on July 5, 1997 at Bucksgrove Methodist Church in Havensville, Kansas. She attended the Hope Baptist Church in Seneca. She enjoyed children very much and caring for several close nieces and nephews and other neighbor children.
Sondra died on February 26, 2009 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas at the age of 46. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Rice of the home in Bern; her father, Albert Chauza of Table Rock, Nebraska; her mother, Phyllis Chauza of Hiawatha, Kansas; a sister, Katrina Rice of Hiawatha, Kansas; three brothers, Albert Chauza, Jr. of Croftan, Maryland, Robert Chauza of Salt Lake City, Utah and Gilbert Chauza of Kansas City, Kansas and several nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. A visitation will be Monday evening 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. The interment will be in the Bern Cemetery. Memorial contribution may be made to the Hope Baptist Church in Seneca sent in care of the funeral home.
