In a Holy moment, Terry Lee Miller was called home to our Lord on December 6, 2022, while in residence at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas. Terry suffered a stroke in 2021 and died of cancer. Terry was born on May 23, 1951, to Pat and Jackie [Bumgardner] Miller in Eureka, Kansas. To all who knew him, Terry was a happy and caring individual who could often be found working at the family business, Bern Meat Plant, or walking a nearby river in search of Indian artifacts.
Terry married Nancy Beckwith on June 10, 1973, and together they raised five amazing children. He was a permanent fixture at the Bern Meat Plant working there for 47 years. In recent years, Terry semi-retired from the plant and pursued various hobbies. In addition to hunting Indian artifacts, a passion that was passed down from his own father, Terry could be found researching and building M1 Garands, planting a vineyard, or completing various carpentry projects with his children. He loved history, to read, and never stopped learning.
Terry graduated from Eureka High School, and attended Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas where he studied geology. He, and his wife, Nancy, built their life in Bern. Throughout the years, Terry served the community in many ways. Some of them included serving on the Bern City Council, the Bern Volunteer Fire Department, as Gilman Township clerk, and on the board of the Bern Community Center. He had been an active member of the Kansas Meat Processors Association and served as president. In 2014, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Kansas Meat Processors Association.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Pat and Jackie Miller.
Terry is survived by his wife, Nancy Miller, of Bern; his five children, Andrew (Deven) Miller of Kansas City, Missouri, Karyn (Michael) Stevens of Hiawatha, Kansas, Phillip (Joy) Miller of Wichita, Kansas, Grace (Ryan) Current of Topeka, Kansas, and Timothy (Gina) Miller of Bern, Kansas; his ten fabulous grandchildren, Kaia Miller, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Evelyn, and Titus Stevens, Dane and Gabriel Miller, Bailey and Isaac Current, and Wren Miller; his brother, Gary Miller of Groton, New York; and his sister, Carol (Dan) Bitler of Eureka, Kansas. Terry and Nancy also fostered many children, mostly teenage boys. In 2015, they received the Governor’s Conference Service Award in recognition for exemplary care to children.
A community Celebration of Terry’s Life will be held at the Bern Community Center on Sunday, December 11, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha and the Bern EMTs in Bern, Kansas. Terry always said, "Just scatter my ashes over my favorite site," [referring to his favorite arrowhead hunting site]. That decision is yet to be determined! The family will have a private burial service at a later date.
