Thelma Cross

Thelma M. Cross, 101, died Monday, October 31, 2011 at her home in Centralia, KS.

She was born February 3, 1910 in Centralia, KS the daughter of Alvin and Elsie (Howard) Flentie.  She attended Armstrong 55 country school near Centralia through the eighth grade and one semester at Centralia High School when she decided to stay at home and help her mother care for Thelma’s new baby brother.

Thelma married Raymond Lawrence Cross on August 7, 1929 in Centralia.  They farmed together in the Centralia area for many years and raised two children, Lois and Bill.

Thelma is a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Centralia, The women’s fellowship of the church, American Legion Auxiliary,  a neighborhood card club and the Eastern Star of Marysville, KS where she was a member for over 50 years.

She is preceded in death by her husband Raymond who died on October 1, 1994; her brother, Erwin (Shorty) Flentie; a sister, Wilma Roberts; two great grandsons, Gabriel Cross, Clifford Holthaus, and a great granddaughter, Bellamy Kramer.

She is survived by a daughter, Lois (Alvin) Kussman of Topeka, KS; a son, Bill (Dora) Cross of Centralia, KS; a brother Rex Flentie of Centralia, KS seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church of Centralia.  Rev. Scott Caulley will conduct the services.  Organist is Julie Gleason and Chrys Engelke and Cyril Steinlage will each sing solos.  Burial will be in the Centralia Cemetery.  Casket bearers are Richard Kussman, Bob Cross, Tom Holthaus, Duane Engelke, Jerry Montagne and Chad Kramer.  A family visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home in Centralia, KS.

Memorials are being left to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Centralia and may be sent in care of the Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home.  (Mailing Address - 814 Castle, Seneca, KS 66538).
