Valerie "Val" Ann Deaver

Valerie “Val” Ann Deaver, 69, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2022, at Lakeside Terrace in Sabetha, Kansas.  Valerie was born on June 22, 1952, to Ray and Margaret (Dandliker) Deaver in Sabetha, Kansas. She was a special, loving, and caring person who enjoyed life and spending time with family and friends. At Lakeside Terrace, she was supported and surrounded by a dedicated and loving staff.

Valerie enjoyed spending time at the family farm, the county fair, dressing up for prom, and riding around Sabetha.  Always playful on the rides around town, she loved to choose which direction to go at the stop signs.  She loved to pick the route because the rides would usually end up at the Dairy Queen for a banana split.

As a young person, she lived in Parsons, Kansas where she received social and educational training.  She learned to read and write important words, especially her name, and she was happy to show anyone how well she could write.  Valerie loved listening to music, and she often wore a fanny pack which contained her ear buds and favorite music tapes.

Valerie moved to Ottawa, Kansas where she started her first job at the COF Training Services.  At COF, she worked on contracts that COF received from various businesses within the community.  She was proud that the items on these contracts were assembled by Valerie's team.

In 1984, Valerie moved to Lawrence, Kansas where she worked in the employment division at Cottonwood, Inc.  At Cottonwood, she made cargo tie-down straps for the Federal Government, and she also worked at Allen Press and Packer Plastics.  She lived in a group home where she formed many friendships with other young women.  At Cottonwood, Valerie was supported by a wonderful staff, and she retired from Cottonwood after 23 years of service.

Valerie was active in Lawrence Park and Recreation events and Special Olympics where she won medals for running which she wore with pride.  She attended White Memorial Camp in the summertime.  She especially enjoyed the annual Cottonwood Putt Putt Golf Tournament fundraiser because she was able to play with her family.  Another special memory that Valerie cherished was when she met and had her picture taken with the University of Kansas mascot, Baby Jay.

Valerie loved traveling and some of her favorite vacations were summer family vacations to the Minnesota lakes, visiting her siblings in various states, and Disneyland.  Also, she looked forward to holidays at the farm especially Christmas.  She loved receiving and giving gifts and going to Christmas church services where she would sing and was usually the loudest voice.

Valerie is survived by her brother, Jim (Patti) Deaver of Sabetha Kansas/Tucson Arizona; her sisters, Shirley Wenger of Lawrence, Kansas, Mary (Albert) Maduska of Cordova, Tennessee, and Joan (Ted) Remmers of Platte City, Missouri.  Valerie was a fun-loving aunt, and she is also survived by her nieces and nephews.

Valerie’s siblings, family, and friends will miss her smile, her dancing, her fun-loving nature, and her love of life.  Her sweet, kind, and caring heart will be greatly missed.  May she rest in the loving arms of the angels and her parents.
